Moon Agreement

The 1979 Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, which declares the Moon and its resources the common heritage of mankind; ratified by relatively few states.

The Moon Agreement elaborates on the Outer Space Treaty's provisions concerning celestial bodies, declaring the Moon and its natural resources the common heritage of mankind and envisaging an international regime to govern resource exploitation.

It has attracted few ratifications and none of the major spacefaring powers, which limits its practical influence. The rise of commercial lunar and resource-utilisation ambitions has renewed debate over its status relative to instruments such as the Artemis Accords.

It remains one of the five core United Nations space treaties.
